  • Importing Maya camera info… comp size isn’t correct

I’ve successfully imported Maya camera info into After Effects before, but I must be doing something different this time around because the results in After Effects are not correct. My camera settings in Maya are producing a rendered image sequence that is 640 x 480 with a pixel aspect ratio of 1.0 (square pixels). When importing into After Effects, my camera move and locator nodes are coming in just fine, but the composition is only 320 x 240. Unfortunately, I can’t simply change the composition settings in After Effects because that begins to change the “look” of the camera (appears to have the same effect as if I were to increase the angle of view in Maya).

I tried setting my camera output in Maya to 1280 x 960. After Effects imported that and set the comp size to 1280 x 960. I tried changing the Maya settings to 800 x 600. After Effects imported that with a comp size of 800 x 600. So I tried setting Maya to 640 x 480 again, and After Effects imported that but set the comp size to 320 x 240 again. Ugh…

I tried changing the Maya “resolution” setting to something other than 72 but leaving the width and height at 640 x 480. That didn’t help. I also “unchecked” a box that said “Ignore Film Gate” under the “Maya Software” tab in Render Globals. That didn’t help either.

At this point I will just proceed using the 800 x 600 version and then scale that comp down in After Effects. Not terribly elegant, but that should work. If anyone has a clue as to why After Effects is incorrectly setting the comp size for 640 x 480, please respond.

    Thanks!
