  • Importing Lightwave 3d into AE 7?

Posted by Matthias on February 21, 2006 at 6:56 am

Can you import an animation from Lightwave 3d into AE 7. Like if i was to make a model and then make an animation in lightwave is there a way to import it into AE 7. example… a plane in lightwave flys by, import it into AE 7 to put in real footage. I know you can put a blue background behind you animation in lightwave and export it out as like a quicktime file and then key out the blue in AE. But i want to add shadow and make it more real to the footage as possible.

    Thanks,
    Matthias

You cannot import models into AE. You need to render them with Alpha channels so the scan be imported in AE without keying. Shadows can be matzched in Lightwave by using front projection mapping on dummy geometry in combination with special render properties for those mapped objects. It’s all explained in the manual.

That’s not entierly correct. You can import 3D objects exported from LightWave using Zaxwerks plugin. Good for logos.

Yeah, but do you really expect someone who has a 3D program to invest another 300 bucks in Invig and still see that it’s much more limited than even some of the most basic “true” 3D programs? Anyway, a moot point since what he want’s to do could not be done in Invigorator easily.

So invigorator is pretty much only good for like 3d text, it wouldn’t be good for like and object (plane, car).

    Matthias-
Zaxwerks will allow you to import 3D models into it, and pose or animate them. If they are not too complicated, with textures, etc., it really works FANTASTICALLY, because you can use the comp camera in AE, and that helps your 3D space look aligned easily. It’s not really for designing 3D models (although I’ve seen a few pretty cool tricks), but for importing 3D objects, converting Illustrator art into 3D with an instant depth, or some of those things. It excels at a number of those tasks, but heavy duty work would be rendered in Maya, Lightwave, etc, then brought into AE to composite stuff together.
    my 2 cents, anyway-

Aight cool, when you say not with textures, do you mean i wouldn’t be able to let say i have a model of a lion and i created the texture for its body like the hair in photoshop on him. I couldnt import it into ae

Yes, if you create your lion in seperate objects (Eyes, nose, tail tip etc…) and export those objects with their UV mapping. You will then be able to map your object inside of Invigorator. The only thing you can’t do is animate your lion. Character animation is not possible in Invigorator.

awesome, so if i just animate it in lightwave i could basically fake its interaction with whats in the shot of the real footage. like add shadows in ae.

You lost me here. You can only import objects inside of Invigorator not scenes.
You could give us more details on what you are after and maybe post directly in the Zaxwerks forum if you want and if it’s doable we will explain how.

    Salut.

matthias, Serge really is the expert here, you might want to download the demo from Zax and check out some of Serge’s work. You can use reflection maps, bump, etc. But if you animated a piece in lightwave, you’ll bring that animated video into AE and composite it with other elements. You can animate “sets” in Invigorator, but you won’t be able to change the mesh of your lightwave parts or do really complex 3D work like that. I’d check out a tutorial or 2 in the Invigorator forum… at a basic level, it’s easy to make something cool in a HURRY in Invigorator without needing a 3D app, and it’s capable of more complex work… anyway, it fits a unique niche.
