iTunes 6 no longer seems to allow the “burn to CD and reimport” method to change a file’s format.

Here’s a clumsy but effective workaround that does work:

Import the song into a new iMovie project. Export the project using QuickTime advanced settings. Select “sound as AIFF” as the format in which to export. Import this AIFF file into FCP.
