Importing issues– Won’t import mpeg and avi footage only mp4 ?
I don’t know much, but i know how to work vegas. Vegas will not import any Mpeg footage as well as avi’s. I have to convert them to Mp4 footage which hurts the quality. I would reinstall Vegas but i am scared that if i do so all my projects that i am currently working on will go to waste and i will not be able to get them back (which i will not risk.) Is there a fix for this?

How will reinstalling Vegas makes all your projects go to waste?
From you have your vegas projects saved and tucked away in a folder,
you are quite okay to reinstall vegas anytime.Which version of Vegas do you have there? And was it importing those

Okay, that is good to hear. I am using Vegas 11. I don’t think it was importing those files before, i just started using Vegas more frequently so tese issues have arised.
How would you suggest i go about reinstalling vegas? Delete it and remove it with Revo Uninstaller and then reinstall it? I’m not experienced etc. Thanks again!

I just reinstalled vegas… I now can import SOME Mpeg footage and some not. Vegas freezes when i try to import some of them and some it works. What is the problem…

Vegas will import AVI’s and MPEGs that conform to the industry standard. A lot of hardware manufacturers and software developers make their own proprietary (non-standard) video files which Vegas either does not recognise or does not handle well. Whilst you could install a CODEC pack which may allow you to import those files, they WILL destabilise Vegas.
I suggest you try and recapture the source using industry standard codecs. If this is coming from a cheap camera, you may have to edit your videos using the software that came with that camera.

Tristan, like others here, I can import MPEG (MXF files) AVI, MP4. Mix then the Timeline and do everything you’d expect to do with them. As long as those same files abide by the industry standards. If I stray outside these standards then all bets are off!
Get GSpot or MediaInfo and establish just what you have. Could be that the CODECS for those files aren’t present on your PC. Now comes the really sticky icky point: DON’T install a CODEC pack, to attempt to read files that in themselves wouldn’t be seen by Vegas anyway. You could get into all types of issues.
