I’m importing an illustrator graphic (saving as Illustrator 8, it imports fine), but I’m trying to take that graphic and create a sphere – so the logo looks like it’s etched out of something like an egg shell. Basically trying to extrude and wrap. Extruding is no problem, but heck if I can figure out how to wrap this around a sphere (or turn it into a sphere). Can anyone give me some help?
    Thanks!

Try using the some of the deformers. I would suggest checking out either surface or wrap ones. Though others might work better depending on the look your going for.

    hope this helps,

Hi Greg, thanks for the reply! I’ve tried the deformers (Sphereify and Wrap) and I haven’t had any success. Neither creates a round sphere where I can extrude the cut out. Instead of round I get a chunky mess. I know I’m missing something but I’m not sure what… any other ideas would be gratefully appreciated!

the Caps of the Extrude can’t bend unless you set them to Quadrangles (or Tri) and check off Regular Grid then set the grid size small enough to be useful.

Thanks Brian, that’s good to know and I’m sure that would have been my next level of frustration. I’m still not getting my Illustrator image (it’s a single layer with a knock out of the logo) to either become a sphere or wrap around a sphere. This is the first time I’ve had to warp an Illustrator file and I’m sure I’m missing something…

Hmm if it’s just a simple knockout and you don’t need to worry about the actual colors you could try using the bump or displacement channels via a texture. Then you could get an impression of the object. Bump might look really fake at close range so displacement might be better since it effects the geometry but it does slow things down.

Thanks Greg, that’s a completely different approach – I’ll give it a try!

Are the deformers not working becuase you don’t have any polygons on the surface of your imported spline?
