you should be able to import your ai file as a comp and maintain the layer structure of your ai file. first, each vector part of the illustration of your ai file that you want comtrol of in ae must be separtaed into layers. you can have ae separate them by selecting all your vectors (the elements you want to separate must be ungrouped) and choose release to layers from the layers palette. newer versions of ai will create sublayers so you may then need to pull all the sublayers out of the parent layer. now when you import into ae, choose import as composition, and you should have all your layers ready to go.

many thanks for info, looks like thats fixed it.
    another question
when i have illustrator files in ae i want to make them grow ie shapes and lines, do i have to move each mask or is there another way, i know how to use 3d stroke but i want to animate the solid not the outline.
    hope this makes sense
    thanks in advance

you can have shapes grow a number of ways. you can key frame the shape property of a mask, you’ll have the best control that way, but it may get a little tedious and it will only work on masks. you can also animate other properties of masks, like expansion and feather that can help create this effect.

with non-mask layers you may be able to use or combine some of the transitions, like linear wipe, radial wipe and gradient wipe. additionally, animating simple choke can create a growing or spreading effect similar to mask expansion.
