Think of video like cars Ford, Honda and Toyota are all cars just like HDV, DVC PRO HD and ProRes are all formats of video. By only saying you have HD video is much like saying you have a SUV. But it still does not tell us the make and model of your car.

Well I don’t know really what specs you need. The camera is a Sony Handycam model HDR-SR1.
It shoots 1080i Recording. AVCHD. I really don’t know what type of file this is. I have heard that Sony likes to make things extra difficult. Perhaps if you told me where to look for the specific file type I could give you more. I really am new to this but I really want to learn.

According to this support article AVCHS requires an Intel Processor, so unfortunately your computer is to old to get the job done.

So does that mean that I cannot upgrade this MAC? Should I get a different camera? I really have no idea what all that means. I am new to MAC and I don’t have much experience with problems like this. I have a project due in a month at school and I need to know if I should use another camera or upgrade this MAC. Thanks for your time.

You cannot just add an intel process to an old mac no.

You may be new to the mac platform but you are using a old machine. No matter what platform you are using be it mac, or windows old hardware is going to limit things.

Thats your call, you could get a camera that will work with FCP or you can get a new machine that will be compatible with your camera.

There are also software converters that will work with this format…to convert to DVCPRO HD that the G5 can handle.

They do. But at least they allow you do use your G5 instead of having to fork out $$ for a new machine.

Thank you for the info. I am not sure what to do about the conversion though. If the MAC doesn’t see the file how can it convert it in the first place. Maybe I should look for the HD files again and try the programs you spoke of. This CODEC stuff gives me the runs.

I have a similar issue. I have a intel 2 processor in my 08 Imac. I recently installed final cut Pro ( newest version from 09/09..

When I try to import HD from my Canon XHA1’S ,I get an edit that pops up the says my desk isn’t connect. which it is via fire wire.

In easy set up I tried HD and Pro res. without luck.

FCP will easily capture the footage in SD.

the camera is set in HD 1080i 60i

Thoughts?
