  • Importing graphics into AVID- format?

Posted by Taosdreaming on March 6, 2007 at 12:16 am

I am trying to import graphics- Photoshop files- into AVID and when they come in and i play them back, nothing shows up but a black screen although the graphics come with alpha channels (and yes i chose the inverted option) and they are imported as matte keys. Am i using the wrong format?

I import quite a few photoshop PSD’s with alphas without problems. Couple of things you will want to check: Make sure your PSD file is RGB (CMYK files will have problems when importing). I often rasterize text and blending options before importing into avid. I also try to merge many of the layers down to one layer (don’t use Photoshop’s “flatten” option or you’ll lose your alpha channel).

Unless you need to preserve your layers upon import, save your PSD files as PNG files. PNG will give you a much smaller file and you don’t have to worry with alpha channels or flattening layers and effects in photoshop–just put your graphic on a transparent (checkerboard) background and save it–PNG files recognize the transparent background as the alpha channel and imports perfectly into Avid.

One thing to check–cut your graphic into the timeline, open the effect editor, click Invert Alpha. You might have inverted your alpha when importing, but if you saved your alpha channel inverted in photoshop you might not have had to invert on import. Also, check that Render on the Fly is checked (I think it’s under the Clip menu). Also, what system are you using? If you’re using Xpress Pro and you imported at 1:1 you’ll have to render before you can see your graphics.

I’m having a problem of saving (as a copy). When I do this, I keep getting the message that I need to SAVE AS A COPY…..I did this and it keeps happening. I want to import a logo into AVID and want to preserve all shadowing and text effects. Am I doing this right?
