  • Importing from P2: Error

OK…so I have a G-Raid with all the P2 raw data card downloads…nicely separated into individual folders: Artillery 1, Artillery 2, Battle 1 and so on. And in each of these folders is the CONTENTS folder containing the AUDIO, CLIP, ICON, PROXY, VIDEO and VOICE folders…and the LASTCLIP.txt file. In FCP I am going FILE>IMPORT>Panasionic P2 and navigating to each folder and importing…seeing a preview of all the clips in this window.

    OK…got that.

But occassionally, I will get the error that some of the clips weren’t imported because they were incomplete or corrupt. For one I counted 32 clips in the IMPORT window…yet only 20 imported. 11 were missing. When I went to the drive, I noticed that the VIDEO folder had 20 items…all 20 that imported…but then where did the other 11 images come from? Well, I looked in the CLIP folder and there they were…the missing 11 clips…but there was no corresponding video file.

Now…does this mean that the file was most likey deleted in the camera by the operator? I know that the DP and camera guys liked the fact that if a shot they were shooting was just plain bad, or something happened or they couldn’t get it right all they had to do was delete it and it was gone…thus saving time and space. Does this mean that the CLIP files will still be there, but the VIDEO files are gone?

Just trying to wrap my head around this new fangled technology.

ALSO…I have two folders with CLIPS and VIDEO files but they won’t import. I get the error: “Selected path does not contain a P2 volume.” But all the clips and video files (.MXF) are there. Oh…wait…I just noticed that one of them has CLIPS, but no VIDEO. I am having my producer look at the main drives for them.

What they did is on location dumped this footage to four 80GB Lacie Porche drives. My producer then took that information and copied it onto a 1TB G-Raid and gave that to me…putting the LaCie’s on a shelf. So he is checking those original drives for the missing info.

ANYWAY…I still have one folder with proper info not working properly, and 11 clips with no video…

I had that same message, that clips were incomplete or corrupt. Then I looked at clip properties and changed my settings in FCP to match the clip’s capture rate, frame rate, etc. and everything imported without a problem. That would be the first thing I would check.

Okaayyy…Where do I find the clip properties? I can’t see it on the Finder level when I click GET INFO on the .MXF, nor is it available in the IMPORT PANASONIC P2 import window (where you set the path).

    The camera settings weren’t changed…all 720p24…so…

I transferred from the camera direct to my laptop via firewire. Clip properites are listed on the each thumbnail clip in the camera… That’s how I discovered I had my setup different in FCP from how I had captured the clips.

FCP doesn’t care about the AV settings for p2 import. It will read the clips in whatever format they were recorded in.

The sequence settings need to match the clip settings to avoid rendering.

Found that one too, your assumption is correct- the camera op deleted the files and handed you the card – I have seen the proxy hold onto the deleted clip info- just let it mount in the camera and the proxy will reset normally. -I have not seen this in my shipping unit however.

Correct with out that “LastClip.txt” file along with the”Contents” folder you are out of luck on the mac. AVIDS can open the Mxf files without that header file but the mac cannot.

My producer brought me another copy of the files…and they imported just fine. Odd how that info was missing in the first place, but a good testament to the need of backups and backups of backups.

Original P2 downloads on Four Lacie Porche 80GB drives. Info copied to a 1TB G-RAID. The info on three imports was faulty on that, so he copied the originals (just the missing ones) to another Porche drive and these imported fine. Again, with some of the video files missing…but again, due to the DP deleting the unneeded files.

    SWEET!
