Importing from copied P2 material
Hi,
I hope someone can help here. I have a drive with all the correct folder structures as copied by the cameraman – 90% of the clips have already imported correctly into the FCP 6.04 I am using. I am having real issues with any clips that are spanned – none of them seem to come through.
I have followed all of the advice given here about turning off the Advanced Pulldown and Duplicate frames etc. etc. etc., I have copied one group of clips to a new folder structure – keeping the structure the same, attempted to import just those files and as a last resort I have even gone through and renamed all of the relevant clips. All to no avail – nothing will import these files.
I was advised to just import the MXF files direct with the help of the Calibrated MXF import tool – and the files did appear to import – BUT anything over 30″ has been limited to just that a really useful interview length of 30″!
So my questions are:
1: What is the codec I need to put onto the Mac (10.4.11) that will allow me to recode the MXF files to Prores 422 outside the FCP so I can then import them into my FCP?
2: Will that codec work with spanned clips?
3: Why does the calibrated mxf import tool limit clips to 30″ and not work with spanned clips?
4: Why has no one dealt with these problems yet?
5: Who came up with such a laborious and waste of time import workflow in the first place?
If you can answer questions 1 – 3 I would be more than pleased, 4 & 5 are simple frustration at the wasted time trying to get round these problems.

CODEC? DO you mean APPLICATION? Good question…I don’t know if something like that exists.

It depends on whether the application will join the spanned clips. Again, I don’t think an external application for reading and converting the files to anything else. Toast maybe? Jeremy might know this better than I.

I’ll wager the writer of the software, Greg Booth, will chime in an help here. Greg?

I have, but those options that you tried, turning off duplicate frames, has always worked. Do you have ALL the card dump folders mounted in the L&T window? If you have a spanned clip that goes from one card to another, and that card isn’t in the L&T window, it won’t span the footage.

Apple. Waste of time? Well, in this frustrating case, where it isn’t working, yeah, I can see that. But I have never had an issue with this. Still faster and easier than capturing tape and logging…IMHO.
You can always try MXF4QT…that imports the footage directly too. But as you have Calibrated Software, that does this as well, you should use it and it’s workflow and not bother with L&T.

In answer your questions that apply to Calibrated{Q} MXF Import:
1. The Calibrated{Q} MXF Import version you are using limits clips to only showing 30 seconds – because it’s the demo version. The full version, which you have to buy, does not have this demo limitation.
2. Our plugin will not ‘auto-assemble’ a spanned clip within FCP, but it will auto-marry all of the separate P2 video/audio mxf files with timecode and remove pulldown, as long as the MXF files are in the proper P2 MXF folder structure.

Thanks for this. After I sent the post off it struck me that 30″ would probably be a demo default but it does not show as a demo on the software.
I have just tried to purchase the licence but without a paypal account I cannot get it. Do you offer any other ways of getting the licence?

Hi Peter,
We are adding some other pay options but you should be able to checkout and once directed to the Paypal website – it will give you the option of either just paying with a credit card or logging into your paypal account to pay with a credit card – so you shouldnt have to have a paypal account.
