  • Importing Error: “Unknown File” when trying to import AIFF file

Posted by Ryan Steiner on December 21, 2007 at 7:09 pm

    Hello,

I am currently trying to import an AIFF file (score.aif) to Final Cut Pro 6. Whenever I go through File > Import > Import Files, I get the following error:

“File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown.”

Whenever I try to drag-and-drop the file into my library, I get the following error:

    “File Error: Unknown file.”

I noticed that several people in the forum have had a similar error when trying to save their project and that the most common suggestion is to try a program called FCP RESCUE. I tried this program twice deleting all settings, rebooted the computer several times and I still encounter the same problem. I also tried creating a new project and importing the file there, but I get the same error. As far as I understand it, AIFF is supposed to be one of the best supported formats in FCP, so I’m at a loss to understand what is happening with my project.

I am using the following configuration:
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.2
2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac
    OS X 10.4.11
LaCie 350 GB external hard drive

This is the file information I get when I look at the AIFF in Finder, don’t know if it’ll be helpful, but here it is:
    score.aif
    Kind: AIFF Audio File
Size: 57.7 MB on disk (60,522,496 bytes)
    Where: /Users/User/Desktop/Final Package
    Created: Sunday, December 2, 2007. 3:19PM
    Modified: Sunday, December 2, 2007. 3:19PM
    Opens with: iTunes

*Note: After typing that up, I tried opening the file in iTunes to see if it would even play. iTunes does not want to import the file, it will not even show up in my library. I then tried opening it in QuickTime, just to see if that would work. When I did, I got this error message:

“The movie could not be opened.
The end of the file was reached.”

Wonder if this has something to do with it…? Am I, perhaps, just an idiot working with an incomplete file or something? Well, I’m going to try and retrieve the file again and see if it is maybe just a corrupt file.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

    Thanks in advance!

    Quick update:

I tired downloading the file from my composer’s server again and I encountered the same exact problem. So, I don’t think it is a corrupt file, unless it is on the composer’s end. Anyway, still waiting for suggestions, thanks!

It sounds like the composer’s file is corrupt. Ask him or her to re-export and re-post. You might also ask for it to be posted in a couple other formats, say .wav or as a QT file just to help your troubleshooting.

if you’re not having trouble importing other aiff files, I don’t think there’s a problem on your end.
