  • Importing DVD files into FCP5

Does anyone have any exerience/knowledge about this? We’re not interested in importing stuff from commercial, copyrighted DVDs. We’re only talking about DVDs that we’ve produced ourselves in the past or have made with permission from off-air TV broadcasts that we’ve recorded via panasonic decks.
My test captures were successful in capturing up to 15 seconds of material from the VOB files on the disk copied straight onto the capture scratch disk and into the FCP browser. But these were 1 gig files that were copied and should be longer. Unfortunately I can only get 10 – 15 seconds to play.
If anyone has any information about this issue we would appreciate it.

    Thanks.

I use Cinematize 2. https://www.miraizon.com/products/products.html It’s downloadable for $60 and it will rip your DVD content to whatever codec you wish for use in FCP, although I’ve only used it with the dv codec. I don’t believe it will let you grab the menus, but it works great for any of the VOB files. Also, it won’t let you rip hollywood titles so there’s less chance of copyright issues. I used it for a project recently where the camera reel was no longer available, it was a REEL lifesaver.

    Thanks,
    Gary

I downloaded this app. and tried it on a 1 gig VOB file from a DVD but it’s only playing back 14 seconds of the file, which is the same result I was getting importing direct into FCP. Am I missing something here. What do I need to do to import and play back a complete 1 gig VOB file?

Any help you can give is thankfully received.

Which app did you try, the free one or cinematize? I can’t help with the free one ’cause I haven’t used it. With cinematize, it shows you each Video Title Set on the disc plus the BUP, IFO, and VOB files. Be sure you are choosing the correct Video Title Set and if it allows you to select the VOB directly, be sure to pick the largest one. Otherwise, try another DVD to be sure that it isn’t something with the way that particular DVD was created. So how do you know if you’ve picked the correct VTS? With Cinematize, after picking it and choosing next, there is a preview window that will show you the content of that title set. You can even set in and out points if you want to rip just a section of the title.

    Hope this helps,
    Gary

I actually downloaded the free one Dai mentioned. But I’ve since figured out the answer – because VOB files have many timecode breaks you can only play back until the first break, even though you’ve transferred the full show. You need to use the fix time code breaks command and let it scan and fix all the breaks to access the full clip.

    Thanks for your help guys

FYI, I didn’t have that problem with Cinematize. However, free does make up for a certain amount of work.

Hope all goes well for you,
    Gary
