  • Importing Clips, transcoded from FCP

    Hi all,

    I’m working in:

    Win 8.1
    Adobe CC 2014 V8.1

I was given a project that obviously isn’t working. My colleague that sent it has sort of left me in the dark as he isn’t much of an editor. He actually didn’t edit the original either.

When I try to link the media, I get the dreadful Codec not supported or missing. The clips are in a .mov container and will only open in MPC. I did some research on the codec, xd54 and it comes up as a pro-res codec…I could be wrong, but I’m thinking these were first trans coded in FCP (grrr, then the project was somehow reassembled in PP on a Mac. Does this make sense or am I out of my league?

Anyways, I spoke with the director and he said it was a tricaster shoot and he thinks it might’ve been done in Avid. But he doesn’t really know (grrrr).

Any hoot, I save the clips properties. they are posted below. Any expert help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Todd

I thinks that’s the XDCAM implementation from either Avid or FCP.

Download the trial of this product and see if it helps.

    Thanks John,

You were right on the money. $149 per license. I’m wondering if there is any other options out there though? A tad bit cheaper haha!

    Thanks!

Unfortunately Apple decided to make a few FCP rewraps proprietary to their pro apps and not include them in standard QuickTime.

I don’t know of a way to use this post-FCP material on Windows outside of getting the Calibrated software product or similar.

The guy who shot this exported from a tricaster. He says that it works perfectly fine on his system in FCP, Premiere and Avid. But he’s on a Mac and I’m on Windows.

When I installed the trial of Calibrated (Q) XD Decode, it works with the of course the watermark. ALso, he says it’s pro res 4:2:2. Which it clearly shows the xd54. Not sure if that’s the same thing.

If I buy QT pro, do you think that might do the trick and install certain codecs I don’t get with my version of QT?

    Thanks!

No. QuickTime Pro doesn’t have the codec.

The reason why everything on his Mac recognized the media was because FCP was installed on it and the codec was available to all the applications on his system.

Even a Mac wouldn’t be able to run this material without FCP or Motion installed.

    Thanks Tim,

I’ve called Adobe and they told me that the xd54 codec is available through QT for Windows, but for the life of me I can’t find it. They said it’s a prores codec. I’ve Googled my butt off trying to find it, not finding anything but the $149 decoder. I was told that the tricastor is Windows based and that I should have no problem, which I don’t believe.

    I’m running out of options.

Ok…weird. I think I figured this out. Well…I did but it’s odd. I changed the extension to an mpg and it works. It was originally a QT. So now I have to change a million clips to mpg and I’m golden. ODD!

Now that I look at the specs you have, it looks like ProRes…no long GOP encoding.

If that is the case, you should be able to decode it with a current installation of QT for Windows. I handle (playback, not encode) ProRes on my Windows systems frequently enough.

Really? Wow…that IS wacky. An MPG extension shouldn’t allow playback of a ProRes file…

    Hi Tim,

I have the latest QT for Windows 7.7.6 and have Pro which is up to date. I’m able to only get audio, no video after I installed the trial version of Sheervideo Pro. I’ve installed AvidCodecsLE234 and 2.3.8

When I open QT player and choose “open”, I’m getting a thumbnail.

The only things that works is changing them to an mpg.

    Grrr!
