  • Importing Clips – Anyway to Rename?

Posted by Philip Davies on November 17, 2011 at 1:39 pm

All of our projects involve importing clips from at least 3 cameras (SDHC cards)…

I like how, in the import window, the clips are named “clip 1”, “clip 2” etc but I don’t like how, after import, they are named after their date/time taken. They end up being grouped/arranged in a random order, rather than by import (i.e. by camera) or by the actual date they were taken (even though I’ve synced all the camera’s time and date settings).

What I end up doing is manually renaming each clip as “CamA clip 1”, “CamB clip 1” etc.

Is there any way to preserve the “clip 1” names in the import window… or set a prefix for the names of clips before each import (which then just has a number added to it)?

    Thanks.

Select the clips in the browser. Go to the Info tab of the Inspector. Click the gear popup in the lower right and select Apply Custom Name.

    All the best,

Keep in mind that renaming clips in FCP X is kind of a “from this point in time forward” convention.

Meaning, if you put a clip in a timeline, then rename it in the Event Browser, the clip will still have the original name in the browser.

So, if you do want to rename your clips for an entire project, then do so before you start using them.

    Tom…

Best reply to a forum post I’ve had in a long time thank you! Simple solution but I wouldn’t found it stumbling round. Great!
