Importing Avid codec into Avid
Hi there,
I am wondering what happens when you import a file with an avid codec into avid. Does it use the codec, or does it repack it. Does it change quality?
For it not to change quality I would have to make sure that the import settings set in MC 5.5 are the same as is present in the files that I want to import, am I correct?Also it doesn’t matter that I converted this handycam footage to the avid codec using Adobe Media converter, does it!?
I did so because Avid obviously wouldn’t take the files as they are.Thanks for any help clearing this up.
Any advice on importing files with avid codec into avid appreciated! -

If by avid codec you mean DNxHD, then it normally just rewraps it. This is called fast import.

Yes, I guess that is what I mean.
Somewhere I read that it says “fast importing” if you get it right. Is that correct for Media Composer version 5.5. or 6? -
Normally an import would identify if the file had an avid “native” codec and if so and it didn’t match the import settings you had selected it would pop up with a dialogue asking if you wish to ignore your import choices and fast import or import using the settings you’d selected and effectively re-encode (and then ask if you wanted that done for all remianing files or not)
