Importing AVI clips with soundtrack
Hi all,
first off, I have checked Tutorials & searched in div. foren, but have found no answers to my rather lame / n00bie query …
I have used other editing software, rather simple and limiting, and now wish to work somewhat more creatively.
I have access to PremierePro CS3 and have been experimenting with simple stuff, like editing movies recorded off TV. These files are AVI with embedded soundtracks, and my problem seem to be that these audio tracks are not being embedded into the edited output files.
I have created the projects using the correct parameters for video and audio properties, indeed sometimes the video when displayed in the source pane, will play correctly (with sound), but after editing the clip, there is no sound when dragged onto the timeline.What, if anything, am I doing wrong? I would more than grateful for any pointers / tips for this rather stupid and elementary issue.

.. I somehow had the feeling that somebody was going to ask me that!
I can only pass on the following:
The file was no recorded by myself – this was done by means of a Web-based VCR service, therefore I have not yet really been interested in finding out what was used to code the file.
What I do know is that I have no problems playing this file with diverse MM players : VLC, DivX (latest), etcetera.
I probably have too many different CoDecs for one and the same type of file, and I probably do need to thin out the diversity.
Back to your question though, I did see that the ‘haali splitter’ was active during editing in PremierePro, is this suitable / compatible? What would be optimal??As soon as I am able, I shall gather complete details and pass them on to you.

Playing a file and editing a file are very different processes. The fact that you can play a file does not mean it can be easily edited.

I don’t know what your intended delivery format is, but DV AVI is an optimal editing format.

Hi Eddie,
thanks for the pointers, I was totally unaware of the fact that ‘edit’ & ‘play’ codecs differ! I have started to google around for more information, and my suspicions about having too many differing products (and their CoDecs) having negative effects seem to be well founded.
The flip side is of course, that so many differing file type / codec combinations being offered or available, requires that one has a broad spectrum of software to cope with mainstream MM data – so much for standardisation 🙁
Can you recommend any particularly well matched editing / playback DV-AVI CoDec combination (if there is such a thing!), I shall be using DV AVI (as you suggested) and primarily the European PAL System as my target.again, brgds …

The DV AVI codec that comes with PPro is all you need in that arena. You’re good to go. Convert your files to DV AVI prior to importing them into PPro.
