Importing Audio that is a capture setting of 29.97 FPS- Final Cut still thinks it’s 25 fps
Hi quick question to all in the know because i’ve tried troubleshooting this to no luck, if i give you a run through I hope someone has any input on what could be the issue im facing –
I’m used to editing at 25 fps but am editing a project that has been shot at 30 fps due to it being filmed in New York and having the frame rate etc applicable to the voltage of the lighting. It’s shot on 7D with the audio recorded separately and its with the sync that I seem to be getting the problems.
As im used to always working at 25fps, first thing I did was trash my preferences and open a new project that has a timebase setting of 29.97 instead of my usual 25fps, although when im importing audio when I click through the frames its still at a 25fps setting… Not sure how I can fix this as have tried all the options I can think of.
I really wanted to start syncing up the audio to the clips but can’t seem to import the audio at 29.97 fps, any idea what could be causing this?
Any help or thought from anyone that know what could be causing the problem would be appreciated or anyone that has experienced a similar issue and found a resolution would be much appreciated. I’ve gone as far as creating a new project with purely 29.97 settings and even when i import into that it still remains audio at 25fps, if anyone could help it would be amazing as i’m running out of possibilities here…

First, delete the audio out of your project. Then setup your project in a 29.97 easy setup (control-q). Then quit FCP. Then reopen FCP. Import your audio and you should be good now.

Hey thanks for the reply Jeremy but it hasn’t seemed to have solved the problem? Strangely it didn’t work even when set at 29.97 and on a new project.
Again after doing this, I re-trashed my preferences and relaunched final cut as a new project and then imported the audio and the same thing happened. When i click through the audio frame by frame as soon as it hits 24 frames the next frame starts the next second. Not sure why this is happening as the audio imported now (particularly as it’s a new project) should be recognised as 29.97 fps
Any further suggestions or thoughts? This has got me stumped to be honest?

OK. Follow these steps exactly.
Make a new project and close all the others.
Hit control-q. Choose a 29.97 easy setup. Make a new sequence. Save.
Quit FCP. (Very important).
Open FCP (Very Important).

So did exactly as you suggested. quit and relaunched.
When I imported the audio it again was acting as a 25fps bit of audio. So to test it, I then imported a random peice of audio from another completely seperate project, this however played at 29.97 fps. So Again, i reimported the audio I needed expecting it now to surely be 29.97 but to no avail, it was still showing as 25fps.
So to continue this troubleshooting, I exported the audio from a wav to another wav in quicktime and then imported the new version of the same file into final cut and strangely enough this was now 29.97 but the original when (after deleting all audio again) imported was 25fps.
I guess I have a solution to the problem but the issue is, I have 2 days worth of interviews with audio for each take, Now if i was to go through and re-export all these wavs it will take forever, but at the moment that is the only way final cut seems to recognise these audio files as 29.97
Any thoughts on this? This is one of the most puzzling situations i’ve come across in many years of editing?
Any further thoughts as well as your suggestions this far would be and have been very appreciated, Thanks again for your time
