Importing an Avid 5.5 project into Avid 8.4
Posted by Eric Merklein on June 6, 2016 at 4:53 pmGreetings.
I have an Avid project that was created years ago using Avid 5 on a MAC. I cannot see how to bring the project into an Avid 8 system on a PC. I can’t even see the media using Media Tool. I even rebuilt the media data base. Is there a magic fix?
Many thanks.

June 6, 2016 at 5:33 pmDo you have the project?
Just place that in Avid Projects folder.
I would suggest making a new MXF sub-folder with the old data to keep to clear from new ones.
I get paranoid with mixing old files.

June 7, 2016 at 8:17 amOk don’t copy the project over. Create a new project on your V8.4 system with the same name as the old Project.
In the old project copy the bins across. On Mac systems they may not have extensions to identify them. If so there will be two files in the project folder with the same name as the Project (the actual Project file and the settings file) Ignore those and copy the rest to the PC Project folder your just created.
Add a .avb (Avid Bin) extension to those copied files if no extension exists.
Now open the project and you should see the bins and be able to open them. The Media is a separate issue to resolve. Was it MXF media or OMFI media?
Do you already have an Avid MediaFiles folder on your 8.4 system with an MXF folder in it and probably a 1 folder?
If so and you have the same folder structure on the Mac system you need to copy the numbered folders on the Mac system to the PC system. You can change the folder number to help avoid conflicts with folders you may already have in the PC MXF folder. So add 100 to each folder you copy across.
So 1 become 101 2 become 102 3 becomes 103 etc. When all copied do a search on that PC MXF folder for msmFMID.pmr & msmMMOB.mdb delete all instances of them.
Now Launch Media Composer and wait while it rebuilds those databases.
Open media tool and it should show the media from that drive and project.
Check Sequences for offline media (timeline setting)
