Wondering how i should output my comp from AE, if i want to import it into final cut (version 5).
my sequence settings for final cut are based on footage shot on a DVX-100 (23.98 fps) with an anamorphic lens adapter (so i guess it’s squeezed while shooting, then final cut unsqueezes it when you bring it in)…….when i’m in AE, im not sure how to deal with the whole square pixel deal or if i export it as an animation or whatever……kinda confused on the whole process.
also, maybe kinda a bozo question, but i was wondering if it’s any better to export the final cut footage and import that into AE, and work from there?

    Thanks!

    Thanks Dave,

Now, i’m just comparing a title sequence that i imported into FCP, from AE…..and it just doesn’t look quite as crisp as it does when working directly with FCP text….am i missing something?

Also, wondering if i have a 5 minute movie in FCP and i’m ready to do some AE tweaks…do i import comps from AE into FCP…or do i export my FCP movie into AE and work from there?

    thanks again,

    ahh, i see…
    thank you.

one last follow up on this….for this particular project i’m working on…where i have to produce title sequences and some cool Stacy Peralta-esque graphics…..do i import video into AE and manipulate from there, or do i make a bunch of comps in AE and overlay them on top of my video in FCP?

    thank you, Dave

    Hi Dave and Dean,
Sorry to butt in, but I’m a little confused by Dave’s response here. When you say that the image won’t look as crisp because DV is a lossy codec, you’re only referring to the imported *text*, right? It was my understanding that DV is *not* lossy when it is exported. It’s just ones and zeroes. It is only lossy when coming from a higher-quality source, right? Or when originating on tape, where I understand it is a 5 to 1 compression. It’s not *re*-compressing 5 to 1 each time it is exported.

On a recent project of my own, I have exported the same Quicktime files with minor edits out of Final Cut and then re-imported and exported *those* files countless times (I won’t bore you with the reason why), and have done direct footage comparison and there is no difference with the original raw data and the 6th copy. (Keep in mind the original footage was DV).

Otherwise, the workflow you describe is sound for AE.
