  • Importing a DVD into Vegas

Posted by Rick Hughes on July 2, 2012 at 12:57 pm

After a recent dive trip I have been given 2 DVD’s and I wish to incorporate them in with my DVD footage into a single DVD.
Source & edit will all be for PAL format.

What is the correct way to ‘drop ‘ the DVD into a Vegas Project ?

Looking at file structure there are:
There are 2 folders Audio_TS and Video_TS, in the latter there are a number of files ..

    2 x BUP files
    2 x DVD IFO files
    3 x DVD VOB files (video_TS, video_TS1, Video_TS2)

How do I drop these into the project …. or is there a neater ‘import’ DVD option ?

I’ happy to drop in all and then edit down to what I want.

Here’s a better way to do it that works like a charm 🙂

Vegas allows you to open up a DVD .IFO file. This imports the entire .VOB chain for both video and audio tracks.

Click File / Open, then navigate to your VIDEO_TS sub directory and enter *.IFO in the File name input field.
For a regular DVD you will see a VIDEO_TS.IFO, and a VTS_01_0.IFO. Select the VTS_01_0.IFO file and click on Open.
Don’t try this on a DVD disk because Vegas will try to build an .sfk file containing audio peaks in the VIDEO_TS directory.

I’m slightly lost on the response … you say open the DVD and browse to the Vide0_TS directory
Just to be clear this is a ‘normal’ DVD disk someone had ‘burnt’
    I do see video_TS.IFO and VTS_01_0.IFO
I’m following as far as there … but then you say:
Don’t try this on a DVD disk because Vegas will try to build an .sfk file …

The video is on a regular DVD disk so I don’t follow what you mean.

The easiest thing to do is to copy the entire VIDEO_TS folder to your computer and then follow the steps I outlined.
An sfk file is the audio waveform file that Vegas uses.
It’s not necessary unless you want to see the audio on your timeline.

My pleasure Gilles. I’ve used this technique a few times since I found out about it (thanks to Gary James for sharing it) and it works great!!!

Jacob, make sure you drag the one labeled VTS_01_0.IFO as the other one (VIDEO_TS.IFO) won’t work.

    Thanks.

That is the name of the file i was trying to open.

Maybe the problem is with the rip.

I have the original dvd9, can anyone talk me through ripping it properly?

    Thanks again, J

    I’ve only done this with a DVD5, not a 9.
If it’s a copyrighted video (i.e. commercial product) you’re trying to rip, that would explain it as Vegas won’t allow you to import it.
