Importing 60i from HPX-170 into FCP
Hey guys,
I use the HPX-170 and I was attempting to shoot slow motion shots in 60i but when I try to import them into FCP (6.0.6) using Log and Transfer and it imports it at 29.97 fps. It’s really driving me insane because it’s dropped so many frames that the shots are now useless.
So i purchased a firewire cable and tried using Log and Capture to import the footage (with the settings all correct) and it still imported the footage at an incorrect frame rate (about 15 fps.). It’s ridiculously choppy and I’m starting to get really frustrated. It only worked once before log and capture wouldn’t open for me anymore. I tried restarting my computer but now every time I open Log and Transfer and attempt to set an in or out point it completely shuts down FCP.
Also, when I import any other frame rate it is automatically imported it at 29.97 fps using log and transfer.
Doesn’t matter if it’s 720 24pN, 720 60i, 1080i 24p, 1080i 30p, or 1080i 60i – every shot is converted into 29.97 fps.Help?

Sorry to break it to you, but 60i runs at 29.97fps. The “i” in that indicates INTERLACED…and that means that there are two fields per frame…60i means 60 interlaced fields….two fields per frame. 29.97fps. If you wanted to shoot slow motion, you need to shoot 720p60. “P” means progressive, progressive is full fields…so 60p is 60 frames per second. Running at 59.94. That is what you shoot if you want to slow it down by 50% to get smooth slow motion in a 29.97 sequence. Or more for a 23.98 sequence.
This is an easy mistake to make. I really despise the fact that it is called 60i and 60p. It needs to be called 30i and 60p.

There you are wrong. 720p 24PN comes in as 23.98. There is no such thing as 720 60i (720p is a progressive format only). 1080i 30p is 29.97…just progressive and not interlaced, and 60i is…well…29.97fps.
