  • Importing 3ds/psd file as 3d object into AE CC?

Posted by Paul Winterton on December 12, 2013 at 10:36 pm

This is my first attempt at creating a true 3d layer in AE. I’ve watched the tutorials of importing 3ds Max (.3ds) files into PS and then into AE, but all the tutorials are to older versions of AE.

The “live 3d” checkbox is no longer in AE CC. All tutorials require that the “live 3d” checkbox be used.

    Is 3ds Max still supported?

    Thanks for reading and replying.

    Cheers,

Bring your 3D models into Cinema 4D and then import the .c4d file into After Effects.

After Effects CC (12) comes with Cinema 4D in the installer:

After Effects does not import 3D layers from PSD files. That was a lousy feature, and we removed it to replace it with the better Cinema 4D integration.

What version of AE (down to the last decimal)? What are your system specs? Give us as much information as you can about the file you’re trying to import. (Exact extension, where it came from, etc.)
Also, what are the steps you’re taking to try to import it?

I’m all set. Thanks. I’m in cc. Was just starting to figure this new c4d stuff out. Thanks for the reply.

Does anyone know if there is a way to import a 3d photoshop file into cinema 4d? If not is there any way to get my non vectored artwork into cinema 4d so I can make 3d extrusions. I am ultimately trying to figure out how to extrude my images (non vector) and export them for After Effects.
