importing 1920×1080 .mov into FCP, black border when exporting
Hi there,
I am running FCP 5.0.4 and I am working with a scan of super 8 film scanned at 1920 x 1080 using Apple ProRes / Integer codecs
I am a little baffled at what type of export setting to use for a .mov export — I realize there will be some border on the r and left edges because the aspect ratio of super8 film is square, but I’d like to get rid of the top and bottom of the window.
This above result would be fine, but on export I get a border all around the image.I have been selecting differen settings for size and pixel aspect ratio, but I have not found one that works. I’ve tried 720×540/4:3/square pixels and 768×576 SD with no success at reducing the bottom and top borders.
The final version will be projected, so if anyone has any experience with this phenomenon, please let me know. Any information is greatly appreciated!

Export at full quality (File > Export > QuickTime Movie), then take that to Compressor to compress further.

I believe he is capturing 8mm film (4:3) on an HD scanner (16:9), hence the pillarboxing.

To Clarify:
I have a scanned in .mov that was done at 1080p, when I check the properties in “Get Info” I see that the file was scanned at 1920×1080.
I was not sure of how to set the export settings, to 16:8 or 4:3, this is why I posted the question to the forums.
I apologize for taking up valuable time, but I am here to get basic assistance with a not so basic problem.

If you want to export to square-pixel DV (720×540), you’ll probably get the best results by going to Motion (as Dave suggests), or Compressor. If you don’t have or don’t want to use these applications, you could also change your sequence settings to 720×540 (leave the other settings, such as pixel aspect ratio, the way they are). Then resize the video to fit the frame.

I am projecting this for a screening and the border around the image is distracting for the space — I was just using the “off the wall” size of 720 x 540 because is was one of the options smaller than what I was working with — I’ll use this information to get the size I’m looking for, still with pillars, but a better fit overall.

If you’re projecting it, I would go with a 1440×1080 sequence using square pixels. That way you won’t lose any detail from the HD scan.
