    Dear ladies and gents

I want to import a 3D animation from C4D to AE 7.0. The animation flies through a flock of displays showing footage and stops in front of two displays, which show *footage, exchangeable in AE*.

    Three questions:

-What is “Multipass” in C4D (I know only from 5th element…)
-What exactly do I need to export from C4D
    – Do I need a plugin for AE 7.0? I only found one for 6.5.

Thank you folks very much in advance for every hint

[Axel Rogge] “-What is “Multipass” in C4D (I know only from 5th element…)”

Read the manual and search the web. If you don’t have the slightest idea what the concept of multipass rendering means, it would take to long to explain (yeah, I know this sounds harsh).

[Axel Rogge] “-What exactly do I need to export from C4D”

Ideally you’d export all shading info (Specular, Diffuse, Depth, Reflection, Shadows etc.) as either an multi-buffer RLA/ RPF file or as a multi-layer PSD. In addition to that, the AE project export in C4D will allow you to export lights and cameras. It does not export any geometry. You need to place a dummy light in C4D as a placeholder for your image walls so you can easily use their 3D position without having to use 2D tracking.

[Axel Rogge] “- Do I need a plugin for AE 7.0? I only found one for 6.5.”

The plugin for 6.5 works in 7 as well, but on rare occasion can cause errors. Maxon are working on it and a new version should be available in the fullness of time (most likely with another mini-update to C4D itself).

Angie Taylor has an excellent tutorial that will explain C4D to AE mulitpass to you. Comes with files and everything.
