I’m using Premiere Pro CS3 and have a project where I need to use a lot of still images (about forty), all are about 2000×1500 pixels large. After importing the images, some of them periodically go black in their previews. I can close and restart CS3, and some will be back to normal, but after a while they usually go black again. If they are placed on the timeline and they go black, it’s like they’re not even there. What is going on? (Aside from the photos, I have about 7 hours of HDV footage I’m working with. No problems with that though. Only the photos are acting up.)

I have the exact same problem. I have no idea why it’s happening

Digital camera high resolution images consume enormous amounts of memory. Try resizing first to 1200 x 900 if you need pan/scan or 720 x 480 if not.

For those interested, I think I found a workaround solution to my problem.

Another poster was correct that lowering the resolution of the photos would keep them from blacking out. Only problem is that I need that resolution because I’m panning and zooming in on them.

Now since my video footage has never blacked out on me like the photos were doing, I thought what if embed my photos into a video (a few frames each) and then just stretch out the time as needed per photo? So in order not to lose any resolution, I created a new after effects project with a video window of 2400×2400 – which is more than enough to contain any still I have. I then dumped in my still photos and gave them about 5 frames each. Exported that as an uncompressed avi video file, imported that into Premiere, and cut the video up into individual photos. Now that the photos are really video, I get no more blacking – but I still get to work with high rez photos. It’s definitely a workaround, but it seems to work…

Can you explain how you “create a new after effect project with a window of 2400×2400”? I want to try your idea out. I am making my first movie with premeire pro and the photos are blacking out. I would like to get the best quality out of my photos also. Thanks alot.
