  • Imported Illustrator layer gets chopped…

Posted by First Last on July 27, 2009 at 8:05 pm

I’m trying to import an Illustrator file that contains 4 different layers, but one of’em is getting chopped off near the top.

    Any ideas?

I tried that. Still the same outcome.

The only work around I’ve found is to import the file as a composition – cropped layer, delete the problem layer, import the same file again as footage, choose the problem layer, and switch the footage’s dimensions to “document size,” and then open the first comp and drop the individual layer in and reposition it to make it look like it was imported as one big happy family…

    Any other ideas?

Assuming you’ve followed the instructions, I have no clue. But I rarely remember to set crop marks in the original AI file myself.

Which version of AE are you using? If it’s CS4, make sure you update to 9.02 since there was an issue with AI file dimensions which was fixed in that update.

Other than that, AI has changed in the past few versions the way in which it reports the artwork area. So it’s important that the AI and AE versions match, or you may get these inconsistencies. Nothing that can’t be fixed, but it’s inconvenient.

The art board/crop marks aren’t overlapping any part of the illustration, and I snooped around the file in Ai to see if there were any paths that matched up with the unwanted crop marks, and there weren’t…

    Currently using Ai CS4 14.0.0 and Ae CS4 9.0.2.42

After it’s done updating I’ll try it again and let you know how it goes.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Just finished updating, restarting, resaving, and reimporting… and it’s still getting chopped. Dang.

If you want, e-mail the AI file to me and I’ll take a look.

Thanks for sending the file, Dan.
I can see what you mean.
I’ll try to see why this happens.

    No problem, Dan.
AI changed its’ artboard/crop behavior recently, probably because of their new multiple artboards feature (remember there are people who use AI for print work? :)) So, apparently you ran into a glitch related to this. For now, you can use the workaround I explained in my e-mail, and we’ll see what’s going on. Thanks!
