Imported Audio Files Too Loud
I hope someone can help me explain this or solve this issue…
After I import various audio files into Avid MC, the volume is WAY too loud! I’m always having to adjust the audio lower, and I even get distortions sometimes from the peaking that’s happening.Any tips, suggestions, explanations??

Are these tracks from a music CD? If so, they’re typically compressed to within an inch of their life so they’ll always be screaming loud. Load them into your source monitor, open your audio mixer, and lower the gain.
OR…
Media Composer 3.5 was just released today and they’ve now added the ability to set the Gain before import, so you can adjust them there and save yourself a lot of time. I find I need to drop most music tracks 12 – 15 dBs. If you have an assurance contract you can upgrade for free, if you bought Media Composer between Feb 2009 and today you can upgrade for free, or buy the upgrade from the Avid store or your local reseller.

Excellent! To change the gain on import, go to your import options and check the Audio tab. You can set it there to lower the gain by X number of decibels, and can even choose to apply it only to CDs.
If you have clips already imported, just select them all in your bin and right click. There will be an option to modify the clip gain. Click that, punch in the number (say -20) and hit OK. Done!
It’s a really, really nice feature to finally have. I played with the trial most of yesterday and am hoping to upgrade our system in the near future.
