Import XD CAM
Posted by Michael Allen on September 13, 2007 at 8:30 pmWhen I import, how do I insure the video shows up directly in the browser. It has worked before, but today I had to import each and every file into the browser window from the desination file storage folder.

September 13, 2007 at 8:35 pmIs it just me or is the XDCam workflow not quite there yet?
The amount of time it takes to deal with copying the media over then having fcp convert it seems to be not much shorter than just capturing as another codec in realtime.
Glad I stayed with DVCPRO-HD on my current XDCAm project.

September 14, 2007 at 2:34 amMike, it sounds like you simply lauched XDCAM Transfer and Imported your clips … this is fine and it works very happily by this method (no need for FCP to be installed)
What you should have done is to choose Import > Sony XDCAM… from FCP’s file menu.
That sends the necessary dtat to the XDCAM Transfer app so that it knows which project you want the clips imported to … how else can it know?Borjis, the workflow is an absolute treat. Very simple, and very much faster than realtime. You have to remember that you are no longer working with tape … if you approach the format from a linear / tape-based viewpoint you will certainly lose many of those benefits. Multiple processes all happening simultaneously in the background whilst you continue to edit/work is the key. Its a new age.

September 14, 2007 at 2:37 amMake sure you use import from Final Cut. If you open the transfer software first and start importing from there it won’t import in FCP.
