If you have Adobe Flash you can export a fla as an ai file under File > Export then choose .ai as the file type to export.

There’s no way to directly import an swf into ai as the file types are not compatible. A swf is a compiled Flash application not really a graphic or movie though it can be used as one.

I had my computer forgotten then stolen and had completely lost the source code and art assets to the flash site I built. I was able to get some of this back by decompiling, opening the decompiled fla, and exporting the art assets I dragged onto the stage to an .AI file.

The code was completely mambo jambo and I elected to toss it, but at least I saved the art assets.

    whew.

Although this response is 2 yrs too late, someone in the future will have the same question and I have not seen anyone properly answer it (at least to my satisfaction).

    What you can do:
    1) Create a new document in Flash
    2) File > import > import to stage
    3) Scale all the elements so that they fit on the stage
    4) File > Print > PDF > Save as Postscript
    5) Give it a name and when done…
    6) Open it in Illustrator! ;-p
