Import raw HDV for my PCousin
Hi everyone,
I’m a brand new member here, but I have been a long time reader. I just recently purchased myself a MBP and FCP and I’m on my way.My first job: My cousin’s wedding.
So he wants everything in HD so he can make his own videos out of it. So we rent SonyZ1U and I shoot the wedding. Now we are stuck on how to get this footage to him, a PC guy. I think, ‘I capture all 8 hours of it through FCP, then give him a hard drive with all the files.’ Nope. Files are over 4GB. So I cut them all into 15 minute chunks, export using compressor into HD 1080i60 files, and send him the hard drive. Doesn’t work. He opens the files and hears audio, but no picture. And they are all quicktime files. He has Quicktime Pro, but no luck. He thinks there must be a way to capture the footage off the tapes without making them into Quicktime files. I sure hope so. Also, he will be using Adobe Premier.I have a Sony HVR-M15U deck, all the original tapes, MBP, Final Cut studio 6.0.4, and a Firewire800 maxtor 500 GB, WD MyBook(for him)
My question: How do I import all this footage so it is all raw, uncompressed footage that he can use on his PC? Please, oh please, help me finish this project and get it off my desk!

Why don’t THEY capture the footage? The HDV codec in FCP is ties to FCP…you cannot see the files in any other NLE, or even in QT if the computer doesn’t have FCP. You can try the Apple Intermediate Codec, but I am not sure if that is cross platform either.
ALWAYS capture the footage in the NLE you will be editing. THEY need to capture the footage…you should not capture the footage for them.

Thank you for the reply, and I understand what you mean in regards to them capturing the footage. However, it’s just my cousin, he lives in Florida, he is very busy and he doesn’t have the equipment that I have to import (the deck) AND he hired ME to do it. Also, because it was shot on the Sony Z1U, we are limited with how to import because you either need the deck or the camera. So in retrospect, we’ve made some mistakes, but I am learning a lot, and we must press on.Maybe its just a sign of my ‘still learning’ brain, but I just can’t believe there isn’t some way for me to get these files to my cousin for him to use. It just seems so weird that captured HD can not be used by a PC. Does QT AND FCP put a codec on the captured files??
My next question, what would be the best way to export these files to something he could use with the best quality of video? In other words, he can’t have the raw HD files, so what can I make for him?

Perhaps you can find someone local who has a system with Premiere Pro and download it that way. If you don’t know anybody, ask around the different forums to see if someone is willing to rent you some time on their system.
And if you do go that way, it’s best to format the drive with NTFS, to avoid the 4GB limit.
