I have a 10 layer .psd file I want to load into AfterEffects.

How do I load it without flatening it?

Right now I load one layer at a time, and was guessing there must be a faster way.

    THANKS!!!! For your help

    THANKS

I am guessing you don’t have CS3? But if you do have CS3, you could just do this:

Import file (ctrl-i), as soon as you open the .psd file in After Effects, you should get a small dialoug window up. There you can select som import options for that file. If you select Composition as import kind, you will get the .psd file as a new composition and a folder with all the layers, all present in your project window. If you dont get the dialoug window up, just select composition from main import window, down on the left side.

If you have an older After Effects, perhaps you could try a mainfolder all of the layer and folder in your .psd file before importing. (Don’t know about this tho)

Lets hope this can help untill wise’r people can help you. 🙂

Question to add. I imported a psd and it shows a folder with multiple images, but how do I see the entire psd in my composition with layers i can adjust? When i drag over the psd comp it’s flattened and I want to edit individual layers.

In short, how can I select individual layers from the image when I drag the comp over?

Make sure your .PSD file is in RGB. If the PSD is CMYK After Effects will flatten the file when you import it.

HAHA! Hit it on the head!

Couldn’t figure it out… CMYK… Print designers die hard.

I have a question in relation to this thread.

I have imported a psd into AE (CS4) and been working with it for a while. Now I have added a few layers in my psd. Is it possible to somehow reload the psd in AE so it automatically adds the layers. The reload footage function only reloads the original imported layers…?

    Please help ,-)

In the Project window, open the .psd Layers folder/group, right-click on a layer and select Reload footage.

To add new layers to AE: Create additional layers in the .psd, go to AE Project window, open the .psd Layers folder/group, ctrl+I to import the same .psd.

This time, select Import As “Footage”, in the next dialog, under Layer Options, select Choose Layer: ‘theNewLayerName’. I haven’t figured out how to import multiple new layers though…
