Import MP4 file into Avid?
Posted by Charlie Chang on December 26, 2007 at 10:03 pmIs Avid able to import MP4 files generated from Sony PMW-EX1? If not, what are the work flows for importing files from PMW-EX1 camera? I tried the Sony Clip Browser export to MXF file but that’s not working either.

December 29, 2007 at 2:48 amApparently at the 25 mbs setting, you can use the Sony utility and transfer the files to MXF and import them into Avid. No joy for the 35 mbs files yet.

January 2, 2008 at 9:23 pmThanks! I got the 25Mbit/s files to work but you’re right, the 35Mbit/s files kept causing exception error in Avid. Besides Sony Vegas 8 Pro, are there any other work-around or utility that will get me to use Avid to edit my 35Mbit/s files? I’ve tried Brad’s utility and it’s not working right for me plus it’s so darn slow and the file size goes from 225MB to 1GB.

January 2, 2008 at 9:27 pmNone other than capturing via the HD-SDI out of the camera into Avid via the SDI Mojo (or analog component). But that negates the beauty of importing files versus capturing, eh?
Hopefully Avid is working hard on this one, as FCP will import these now.

January 3, 2008 at 3:33 amWhy is FCP seems more and more attractive every time I encounter a problem/limitation with Avid? I’m looking into upgrading to Avid Media Composer which cost $4,500 compare to about $1,700 with FCP Studio. I now owned the Sony EX1 and if Avid can’t handle the file format, I’ll be hard for me to justify buying the Media Composer version.

January 22, 2008 at 1:28 pmIs there any news on importing the MP4 files from the EX1 into Avid software? And does someone know if it will work on FCP 5 as well?
We’re considering the purchase of the EX1, but it have to fit in our current Avid / FCP5 workflow.Thank in advance.

February 6, 2008 at 6:20 pmIt doesn’t appear that anyone knows or even Avid knows at this point how to import an .MP4 file into Avid. The best options are FCP or Sony Vega.

September 9, 2015 at 10:35 amAs matter of fact, Avid Media Composer might not work with some MP4 files due to the codec issue or other reasons. In order to ingest MP4 files into Avid MC for editing smoothly, the easy workaround is to transcode MP4 footage to DNxHD, which is natively supported by Avid.
