This is a bit of an art project, and below is an example of something I’d like to do regularly, so want to develop a workflow that is practical. I understand I’m trying to do something unconventional but here goes …

I have a midi file, which uses 20 tracks of instruments and loops to create a well known pop song. When I import this into Garageband all 20 tracks show up, and I can manipulate them at will, listening to just the vocals or drum beat etc.

I’d like to do this with Avid MC instead, as I plan to arrange and sync video with each of the loops and samples.

Is there anyway to import this midi file with all 20 tracks into Avid MC? I’m aware I may not be able to playback all of these simultaneously, but this isn’t a problem, as once I have assigned all of my video samples and loops I can do audio and video mixdowns to play them back together.

The only way I can see it working at the moment is to export each individual track from Garageband, and then import those one by one. Surely there’s a way Avid could just support an import of a file that has multiple tracks?

Thanks in advance Creative Cow gurus …

Does Garageband export a multitrack file like BWF?

It doesn’t, it only has very basic export options, to either MP3, AAC, or a ringtone or podcast which I think are m4a and m4r. At present I’m only using Garageband to see what information the midi-file contains, as Garageband can’t even export a midi file.

I have read that WAV files can be more than 2 tracks, so will try exporting the .mid file from Quicktime as a .wav and see what information it keeps.

    Any other suggestions welcome.

MC can import MP3 as well, but I assume it is a mixdown of all your tracks and not individual tracks?
