  • Import media from Sony AX2000 into Final Cut Pro

Posted by Peter Rajotte on July 8, 2010 at 2:22 am

I’m in desperate need of trying to figure out how to import my media from my sony ax2000 camera into Final Cut Pro. I just spent an hour at the apple store with a trainer whos only solution was to go to SQUARED5.com and download the free program called MPEGSTREAMCLIP.
That program will let you convert my files (AVCHD) into quicktime mov. files. But this is a huge pain in the neck because I have to render a ton of clips that I recorded.
For some reason when I import my AVCHD clips into FCP there is no audio only video showing up. I have record both in SD and HD and have no luck at all. I’m frustrated to the hilt. I would appreciate any imput. Thanks

[Peter Rajotte] “That program will let you convert my files (AVCHD) into quicktime mov. files. But this is a huge pain in the neck because I have to render a ton of clips that I recorded. “

Then you didn’t convert into a format that FCP works with. That is what you must do. “.Mov” doesn’t say much. It’s like saying “I drive a car.” What KIND of car? “Ford Focus.” So the TYPE of car, in “.mov” form, would be “what CODEC is your footage?” If you look at the EASY SETUP list, that is a list of codecs. The most common format that people convert AVCHD to is PRORES.

    I have a tutorial.

Shane thanks a million for the help. I’m really green with FCP. This is whole new animal to me even though I have done non-linear editing for years but not with FCP. I finally figured out that recording in SD 480/30p or 24p SCAN with my sony ax2000 is what FCP did not like. If I shoot in any HD format I can import through LOG and Transfer.
I really appreciate your help. This forum is a life saver.

    Hi Fernando,
The way I get my video imported from my sony AX2000 is with the log and transfer in Final Cut Pro.
But you need to change the preference settings in the log and transfer. On the top of the log and transfer there is a pin wheel circle that has a drop down. Open that and click on preferences. Then choose the
MPEG Consumer Cameras/MPEG2SD/Apple ProRes 422 setting. This will allow you to easily import your MTS files which get converted into mov. files. Hopefully this helps you.

    Thanks. Peter.
This setting is for HD1080/60i Right.
if so wich one is for SD480/60i?
    and one more question.
Wich is the settings in my project in FCP.
cause i just switch from Premiere to FCP and im confused.
i used to use DV – NTSC and the aspect ratio was D1/DV-NTSC for recording in SD-480/60i and in FCP is very diferent.
is any diference in DV-NTSC and AppleProRes-422?

Thanks again Peter my email is dilf69@yahoo.com if u can send me more info i appreciate a lot.

    Once again.

    Thanks.

This is the typical tapeless workflow for FCP…Log and Transfer. Here’s a tutorial.:

You can import the video files into FCP directly from your SDHC cards Open up FCP and go to File/Log and Transfer. When that opens look for a little cog wheel and click on that drop down to reveal a Preferences.
Under that preferences choose Mpeg 2 Consumer Cameras Mpeg2 SD/Apple ProRes 422.
Once you do that you should be able to see your clips. Let me know if you have any more questions.

The AVCHD from Sony AX2000 doesn’t work we ll with FCP 5/67. The FCP X may surppot it well.

If you are using FCP 5/6/7 to edit the footages, I advice you to convert AVCHD to ProRes (FCP’s native format) before importing to FCP. The conversion will save your rendering time, it menas that you can directly drag and drop the covnerted file to FCP without L&T.

Actually the Sony AX-2000 will import fine in FCP 7. Simply go to File/Log and Transfer and a screen will open for you. At Top of the screen (just above “Media Duration” there is a little Cog wheel. Click on that drop down and click on “Preferences”. Now set the Source Format to “MPEG 2 Consumer Cameras” and
Presto your file thumb nails will appear and you are good to go for importing. The files will be converted to mov. format which works fine in FCP 7 and most likely 5 and 6 as well.
