  • Import HDV video from Sony HVR-M15AU

Posted by David Ilsley on January 24, 2009 at 1:49 pm

I am using a brand new Sony HVR-M15AU Desktop HDV VTR, and while the device control in the capture window of Premiere Pro 2.0 can control the deck perfectly, no video is captured thru the firewire connection. When I hook up my Sony HDV camera – everything is captured fine – so the project settings must be correct. Why is the deck recognized as a device, but no video is passed over the firewire to Premiere ?? The deck indicates that it has an HDV, 60i, tape inserted.
    Thanks,
    David

Make sure the input switch on the front is set to DV.

    Hope it helps,

Or rather that it is set to HDV for HDV capture and to DV for DV capture. On the MU25, the setting is in a menu and the auto setting never works. with PPro (or FCP)

we have both a 15 and a 25. The 25 works great with Premiere. The 15 has issues with Premiere – we can control it but not capture.

    Hi David,

Please check that “i.Link Convert” is OFF in the deck. The Sony HDV cameras I’ve worked with have this “downconvert to DV” feature ON by default when new, maybe the deck is the same?

If deck is converting 1394 out to DV, you WILL have deck control via Firewire but no image to capture in an HDV project.

Thank you! You were right. The factory default was set to down convert to standard def DV. Even though the lights on the front of the deck indicated the tape was HDV, the deck was still down converting the signal to DV. I am familiar with the Sony type menus and I was able to change the “IN/OUT REC” setting and turn the down convert off. (I first had to hook the output video signal from the deck to LCD screen to view the deck’s main menu.)
    Thanks Again !
