I have a client working in SolidWorks2007 that needs some motion graphics created using his product. Is there any way to import data from SW07? The export formats he listed for his app are:

.x_t, .x_b, .igs, .step, .sat, .stl, .wrl, .easm, .u3d, 3dxml, .xaml, .cgr, .asm, .hcg, .hsf, .tif(2D), .pdf (2D), .jpg (2D)

none of the 3D formats listed here are familiar to me, and as far as I can tell from lookiing at the Import/Export prefs, none can be directly imported by C4D. Am I wrong with this assumption? Maybe there is a free/shareware format convertor I could use.

Any help would be great as he i anxious to get an answer.

    cheers all

technically, c4d can import .stl and .wrl.

however, there are tricks (which I don’t recall right now) during export from any cad app in order for a successful c4d import. You’ll need to use trial and error, and maybe even make changes to the model in solidworks.

it is usually not very fun to move from cad to c4d

thanks mike, i just recieved a .stl from my client…hopefully this will work.

Ugh….CAD what a nightmare, you’d think this day and age it would a bit easier

No, a wrong assumption on your part. CAD and 3D animation have a completely different focus and thus employ different methodologies. Neither directly relates to the other and just like you screaming at the CAD file you received, CAD people hate 3D artists when they need to build an actual working design based on their work. ;O)

    Hey Mylenium

yes I appreciate the vastly different disciplines of the 3D and CAD worlds. I just feel that in this day and age where files are shared between depts like never before that the 2 worlds may share some interoperability. The reason those CAD jockeys hate 3D artists is that they keep getting asked to build something. It happens enough that there is now a need for some synergy. No point both worlds being snobs and saying “we’re different” or we’re exclusive”. There is obvioulsy a need here.

3DSMax used to have an architectural version VIS I think. And I read that Maxon released an engineers version of C4D or something. Seems like there is some movement there. Maybe more than I am aware of.

Anyhow, I hope my .stl files work. Like Obe Wan, its the only hope I’ve got

    cheers
