  • Import from P2 Cards

Posted by Don Priess on January 25, 2012 at 7:42 pm

I am just transitioning from FCP to Premiere CS.5 on a Mac. Shooting with a Panasonic camera I partially filled one of the P2 cards. From a P2 reader I transferred the CONTENTS folder to my 32tb SAN. In Premiere, I located the folder and the clips showed up. I was able to import into Premiere and all was fine. I put the P2 card back into the Panasonic camera and continued to shoot without reformatting. I filled the remainder of the 1st P2 card and then filled the second P2.

Now, how do I ingest this new footage as the CONTENTS folder is always the same name? If I copy the first card back in I assume it will just overwrite all the (same) existing footage and simply add the new footage. Shouldn’t be a problem But when I copy the 2nd P2 it will overwrite the 1st card because it has the same CONTENTS folder name. And when I shoot in the future for the same project, it will also overwrite. If I change the name of the CONTENTS folder i.e. CONTENTS_02, Premiere does not recognize it. I’m sure there is a way around this.

    Thanks,
    Don

Premiere will import even orphaned mxf files, so importing is not an issue.
However you probably want your P2 card to pop-up in media browser (without going to “Video” folder). In that case you have to keep the naming structure intact. Probably good way of file management would be something like:
    Project Folder
    >P2Card01>CONTENTS>…
    >P2Card02>CONTENTS>…
    >P2Card03>CONTENTS>….
    etc.
That way, when you navigate to Card folders via Media Browser, it will pop-up as P2 card.

Thanks Ivan. If I rename the folders I can get the .mxf files to appear in the Media Browser and then import them but I cannot get them to appear as they do from the CONTENTS folder, as clips containing a thumbnail. Only files from the original CONTENTS folder appear that way.

I actually just discovered a workaround. I copied the newly shot files in the corresponding folders: VIDEO – CLIPS – ICONS – AUDIO into the corresponding sub folders in the existing CONTENTS folder in my Project folder. Now when I go to the Premiere Media Browser and select “Panasonic P2” in the “View As” drop-down menu, the clips show up with thumbnails, ready to import. Now as I shoot I will be able to add to the CONTENTS folder without having to create additional folders. Not sure if this is the best way but it does work.

That’s why I suggested to keep the P2 structure intact and create separate folders for every P2 card (P2card01>CONTENTS>….). That way you’ll get thumbs as soon as you enter “P2card01” folder (for example)

But again you can always choose P2 from drop-down menu.

I’ve been shooting with P2 and PP for 3 years, and this is what I do.

I tried putting each card in it’s own folder, but clips spanned between cards didn’t come out. (this was on CS3, I’m assuming they still dont.)

The other way to deal with this is to use a windows computer for downloading. Windows offers a “merge folders” option which will combine the two CONTENTS folders together rather then overwriting the old one.

So in Premier there’s no way to consolidate or transcode the p2 material? Like in Avid or Final Cut.
