  • Import DVD Camcorder Disc Question

I imported a DVD from my daughter’s 2010 dance recital. The import made 33 separate files. They are all named VST_01(x) where x=1-33. They are all movie clips around 90-110 MB. The various files did not correspond to the various dances but seemed to just be a set length. The parent dance that I wanted to capture spanned two different files.

I have identified a problem in that each of the files end with a 3 frame segment where the sound is absent. This does make for a noticeable sound skip. The original DVD does not have this skipping artifact when played on the DVD player. I was able to smooth this out by dragging the later file onto the former one and making a transition. Is this how the imports usually happen? Is there a way to change how the files are imported so that I do not have to contend with this? Is there anything else I should be aware of regarding this type of import? Thanks.

Yes, this is a well known problem when importing DVD files this way 🙁
The fix (using DVD Shrink) is found in my response in the Import VOB Files to Timeline thread.

Thanks for the tip. I have previously worked with some VOB files several years ago when I had converted some VHS tapes with a Pinnacle device. I do remember that I had some occasional difficulties in editing the VOB files. It had been explained to me that Vegas didn’t support this as a supported file type to be able to work with. Has this now changed? In the explorer window, I had to click on “all files” in order to be able to see the VOB file in order to bring onto the timeline. Are there any worries in editing and rendering this file type in Vegas Pro 10? Thanks.

I had this problem with AVCHD files from a HDD camera and sometime ago someone suggested using DOS’s binary copy to join files e.g.

    copy /B file1.mpg+file2.mpg newfile.mpg

It’s been a while I used DOS, you might have to check the syntax!

    It might accept wildcards too.

Most DVDs have VOB files, “Video objects” and if Sonys Import DVD Camcorder Disc doesn’t give you these in mpeg format, I usually just copy the vob files to my hard drive and change the extention to .mpg and edit them in Vegas.

And after changing them to mpeg, try joining them using the binary copy method and see if that works.

[Mark Prebonich] “Are there any worries in editing and rendering this file type in Vegas Pro 10?”

MPEG-2 is not a preferred editing format but I’ve never had any problems.
