  • Import DVCPRO50 MXF footage in FCP without reencoding

    HI,

for the first time in my life I got in touch with the DVCPRO format and P2 cards.
I use Final Cut Studio 2 / FCP 6.0.5. I was searching many tutorials and forums on how to work with this systems. First thing is that in my File/Import section does not appear the command to import Panasonic P2 media, thow I set up all preferences to the DVCPRO format. I tryed both – HD/SD.

Now I moved the media to my HDD and the only way which works is Log and Transfer. That might be good but it only offers me transcoding to Apple ProRes 422 format. I am unhappy about it because I know that every conversion is lossy (except to Uncompressed formats). Is there any way to keep the DVCPRO50 format? I worked with sony XDCAM MXF files and with the XDCAM Transfer utility it only changes the enclosing format – it does not reencode. Is there any similar way with DVCPRO50/HD?

I don’t want to buy additional SW as I don’t expect to work much with this format again.

    Thanks,

    Radim

LOG AND TRANSFER is the new name of that P2 Import window. This is because that interface now imports more types of footage, it isn’t limited to P2. It does AVCHD, XDCAM, RED…

It doesn’t support DVCPRO 50? Sure about that? I haven’t shot DVCPRO 50 with my P2 camera, but surely L&T supports native transfer of that format. I cannot believe that it only offers a re-encode.

L&T works with DVCPro50 shot with P2. There’s no trick. The files appear in the L&T window when you mount the appropriate volume containing them.

    Hi,

thanks for Your answers – I was confused because when I opened the options/preferences of the clips i L&T, it shows only reencoding to ProRes 422 with the olny option to switch to HQ. When I imported the files I checked its format and its truly DVCPRO50 … thanks to God …

    Best Regards – Radim
