  • Import AVCHD Camcorder error

    Sony HDR-SR11
Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 PPP

When trying to connect to my camcorder using Vegas, I get the following error:

An error occurred while opening one of more files.
The file is most likely corrupted or of an unknown format.

I tried to delete the AVCHD folder on the camcorder and did a repair. The repair seemed to just rename the old folder and create a new folder structure. I shot more video, and tried again, but the same error comes up.

Can someone please help me get Vegas to recognize my camcorder files?

    Thanks,
    Ferdie

I’m not familiar with the Sony HDR-SR11 but I do know that it records AVCHD onto a hard drive or memory stick. Does your computer recognize the camera when you connect it? I assume it should just show up as a USB hard drive? Can’t you just drag and drop the files from the camera onto your hard drive and then edit them in Vegas Movie Studio from your computer hard drive? Like I said, I’m not familiar with this camera so maybe this is not possible or desirable.

Yes, I see the folder structure. I even have my Canon software auto download any pics in the DCIM folder.

There is the \AVCHD\BDMV\STREAM path that has *.MTS files. I can copy these over manually.

Are these files all I need? Am I missing anything from not being able to Import AVCHD Camcorder?

I am now shooting on Panasonic AVCHD cameras using SDHC cards. I open the BDMV folder, then the Stream folder and drag the MTS files to my media drive. Vegas 8.0b works very well with AVCHD on the timeline in one of my systems I am testing with – a simple PC with Core2Duo 6600 and 2 GB of ram using Vista as the OS. It was a little confusing at first, as I naturally looked in the DCIM folder for the files.

As John said, the files under the BDMV stream folder are the ones you want. Those are the original AVCHD files that were recorded by the camera.

I don’t think so. The import option is primarily to save you the trouble of knowing where to look. There should be no difference in the imported files.

It is possible that if the hard drive is formatted as FAT32 that some of the files have been split into shorter lengths because of the 2GB FAT32 file size limit and import would stitch them back together on your PC but I’m not sure if your camera has that problem.

None of the files are larger than the FAT32 limit. I think the limit is 4GB, though isn’t it?

What about the one button copy to a Blu-Ray compatible DVD disc? Can I still do this automatically with the one button?

I would try the one button copy and see if it works. I really don’t know.

I have a Canon HG-10 camcorder that I use to capture long segments. It too has the 2GB file limit. I wrote a program last year to splice together the sequence of files generated by the camera for a given segment. Without splicing, you get frame-dropout which can be very annoying!

I found a discussion at : https://www.dvinfo.net/conf/avchd-format-discussion/113083-canon-vixia-hg10-2gb-file-limit-headache.html which explained the problem. This is also where I first uploaded my “File Joiner” program.

I just built a little Google website today to host my file joiner program and am trying to get the word out to anyone that has this problem. I don’t charge anything for the program, so use it and enjoy! Here’s the link : https://sites.google.com/site/mtsfilejoiner/

If you do find it useful though, please consider throwing a couple of bucks my way at PayPal (thesuperstitions@gmail.com).

I hope that this program helps some of you.
