Import as dual mono

Just change your preference setting to mono before importing. It’s under Media, I believe.

Hi Matt,

In my case my main camera has cam mic on L channel and Radio mic on R. Quite a lot of the time the radio isn’t in use so this track is mute. By default it imports as a .mov with a single stereo file.

What I do is select all the files I want to import in the media browser, import into one bin, then select them all, right click and choose Modify > audio channels.

It changes clip channel format to Mono, Number of Audio clips: 2.

If I’ve done a shoot with only one track I can just uncheck the Clip 2 R selection and only have one track.

I often shoot with multiple cameras so I like to choose the settings manually depending on the camera. You can save a preset for each camera if you want to make settings quicker.

Avoid getting stereo file imports by going to Preferences/Timeline and in Default Audio Tracks, select mono for all the different audio paths. I often had this problem importing audio into premiere since I am insistent on having mono dialogue tracks, and I was tired of using the work arounds. This is part of my regular workflow and it removes the extra steps involved in converting stereo to mono.

Hi Mark,

When you have all the clips imported into Project Bin, multi-select all of them at once, then right-click and go into Modify > Interpret > Audio and you should be able to change them all together in one shot.

Depending on your needs, you might also just use Fill Left or Fill Right in the timeline. Say I have a shotgun mic and a wireless mic on camera, on L and R channels, for a wedding ceremony. I’ll only need the R channel briefly for the vows, using the shotgun the rest of the time. I can apply Fill Right With Left effect for most clips (again, using multi-select) and then use Fill Left With Right just for the vows clip. Thereby retaining the stereo settings throughout production and both channels are filled when exporting stereo.
