Import AE Comp into Premiere Pro Problems

Hello Everyone-
I have been working on a film in After Effects CS 5.5. Now i want to take the Comp into Premiere Pro for some editing. The AE Project file is for a feature film. So the comp is quite large.

I open up Premiere Pro, then i navigate to File–> Adobe Dynamic Link–> Import After Effects Composition, then i navigate to the AE Project File. On the right side of the screen, the project opens up and lists all of the comps in the project.

Now here’s the first issue: sometimes the actual comp that i need to import is listed in the window, sometimes its not. All of the pre-comps that make up the larger full comp are all listed, just not the large full feature comp. I cannot determine why sometimes it lists the comp and sometimes it doesn’t.

When it does list the comp, i select it then click OPEN.

Then nothing happens. The comp does not get imported into the project browser. I get no error message.

It just behaves as of i never tried to import the comp.

Any ideas or suggestions on whats happening or what i need to do?

Both AE and Premiere are CS5.5

Heres a different approach that might work. In AE, highlight the comp with your arrow selection tool then drag it just a bit (to grab it). Simultaneously TAB to Premiere then drop the selected comp in the Project window.

Tom- THANK YOU! That seemed to have worked.
I now have the sequence in Premiere Pro.

What i did notice is that i need to also have AE open at the same time as i have the Premiere Pro and linked to the AE Comp.

Does this sound right to you?

Also, would i get any warnings from Premiere Pro if it cannot read anything on my AE Comp?

Thank you for your time and help with this. This is the first time i am going down this road with going from AE to PrPro. Still learning how it works.

Yes they both have to be open for you to be able to TAB from AE to PrP while clutching the Comp with your pointer. I dont use the technique often so I cant say more than Im glad it worked for you.

Importing via Dynamic link when nothing happens, have you waited several minutes??? It might be so large a file(Comp) that it’ll take a few to bring it in… just a thought.

I also did think of that, but what’s confusing is that when i am waiting for something to happen and the comp to go into the bin, i am able to work on the timeline, use the menus on top of the screen, etc… its as if nothing is happening and i am allowed to edit. I would think that if the program were working on bringing the comp into the bin, that i’d get the spinning beach ball, indicating that its working/thinking and i wouldn’t be able to do anything until it finished. what do you think?
