  • Import a video clip with transparent background

Posted by David Mayer on December 6, 2023 at 4:24 pm

I have to tell the After Effects designer how to export the lower thirds animation (RGB + Alpha?) so it has a transparent background, then I have to import it into FCPX, just like I would a .png with a transparent background.

What do I tell her about how to export and how do I import?

From AE they need to export to a codec that supports ALPHA CHANNELS.

Back in the day it was QuickTime Animation but has to be set for RGB+ALPHA.

Now I just use ProRes4444 and set to RGB+ALPHA at export.

    awesome

    Thanks, Eric

Can I anticipate any issues with import – any adjustments I might need to make?

ProRes 4444 supports alpha channel, and gives great results. Not much else they need to know. As long as they’re working in the same color space that you are. I.E. Rec 709, etc.

They only issues are usually aspect ratio and/or pixel size of target.

One example is that in AE I would tend to create lower thirds in a specific size to avoid all that extra info but if I delivered without any specs or info, the end user would apply it anywhere they choose and sometimes scale it and then we have issues.

Scaling down not so much but scaling is a no no.

Then theirs VFX which I do a lot off.
That you have to be exact in both pixel size and aspect ration.
