As I was finishing up my Baptism By Fire on-location maiden editing job on FCP, the client entered the room and said, “Couldn’t you have just used iMovie for this?” I know less about iMovie than I do about FCP (and that’s saying something), so I had no answer. The job was a relatively straightforward show, cutting pretty pix from a DV camera to music for a “Happy Faces” show for a corporate convention.

Was the client right? I know that FCP is incredibly deep and capable. But for the specific job, what would be the disadvantages/advantages of each program?

    iMovie:
    does not use timecode.
does not allow for concise show timing (dissolves push two clips closer together).
edits destructively. Once you use a clip in the timeline, you can’t use it again.
