So I have been going through all the tutorials here and have been experimenting with just about everything i can wrap my pea brain head around. I came across this ‘effect’ by accident and wanted to know how to duplicate it natively in AE.

Basically, in AE 7 pro i created an animation of text glowing. The text is against a black background (no solid) and i have an adjustment layer in front of it with CC fast radial blur. The animation is simple; the center point of the blur moves from left to right, making the ‘rays’ change direction.

when i export this and drop the AVI into Premiere Pro 1.0, I layered it above some footage. After just twiddling with some keying effects, i put the blue screen key effect on the aforementioned ‘text’ AVI. The result was the underlying footage was revealed wherever the ‘rays’ hit. when they would move, they would expose a different portion of the underlying footage.

I can’t seem to duplicate this directly in AE. I want more control and would like to not have to render it and drop it into Premiere. Are there any suggestions on how i might do this?

    Thank you!

I believe what you’re looking for is a Track Matte. Try placing your footage below the text and setting the Track Matte to Alpha Matte.
