IMAGES ImPoRtEd into TIMELINE look FUZZY
Posted by Paola Vengoechea martini on November 20, 2008 at 9:56 pmJust recently I pulled a clip from my browser into the timeline and the image viewed in the canvas was fuzzy, very much unlike the crisply focused image in my viewer.
I’ve tried pulling the clip from the viewer into the timeline and same thing. I’ve even taken out all in and out points that I had and nothing. I haven’t had to take all these steps pulling images into the timeline with the other footage I’ve been working with as they always appear the same in both the viewer and the canvas…
Any help?

November 20, 2008 at 10:12 pmDo your clip settings and timeline settings match up? I know when I put HDV footage into a DV timeline, the resolution isn’t the between preview and comp views.
Any details you can provide would be helpful.

What kind and size of file is it? What are your sequence settings?
Have a wonderful day.

November 20, 2008 at 11:17 pmIs your timeline fully rendered? You need to go up to Sequence > Render All and Sequence > Render selection and make sure you have the full options checked, then render the timeline.

November 21, 2008 at 7:05 amI’m not sure exactly what my clip settings are set to. When we got the footage transfered at the telecine house we did a 4:2:2: apple pro res transfer (we shot 35mm) direct from film to hard drive. As far as the size and the kind of file it is, it’s the kind that can only be opened and viewed by FCP6.
In response to the rendering suggestion, thank you but I don’t think that’s it. I don’t get a screen that comes up saying” unrendered.” The image is simply fuzzy/slightly out of focus and I haven’t tried to add any effects to it. :o)
Where can I look to find out my clip settings and file size information?
Thanks!

November 21, 2008 at 1:22 pmTo find your clip settings, look in your bin window. Select the clip that’s giving you trouble, and it will highlight all the metadata to the right in blue. You can now find size (column named “Frame Size), fps (Vid Rate), and type (Compressor). You may have to scroll to your right to reveal those columns.
And just because the clip in your timeline doesn’t come up “Unrendered” when you play it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t need rendering. At the top of your timeline are two small horizontal lines that tell you what render state the clips are in. Grey or blue means they’re rendered. Green means they’re “pre-rendered”, meaning that a render file hasn’t exactly been created, but they’ll render on the fly (sometimes at a lower compression, hence possible fuzziness) when you have unlimited or safe RT set on your timeline. Read your manual for more details.

November 21, 2008 at 5:19 pmWe keep seeing posts like this nearly every day.
It has to do with proper monitoring. If you don’t view your footage on an external video monitor, you won’t see what your true quality is. It appears that you don’t have one.
If you don’t have a monitor, you can “check” your quality by switching the Canvas to precisely 100%.
An external monitor is not a requirement, but if you don’t use one, you’ll not easily be able to see your true image quality. Most people working with video professionally have one.

Ain’t that the truth… Seems to be a wave of new users trying to emulate Ken Burns suddenly.
Since the economy is so abysmal, I thnk there must be a worldwide pre-Christmas drive to create sentimental videos from old snapshots.
