I’ve carefully created a number of JPGs and PSDs (both in Photoshop CS5) to match the pixel size of my AE CS5 composition, 1440 x 1080. When I import them, they all appear fine in the comp/footage viewer, and their proportions are listed correctly in the Project panel.
When I add any of them to the timeline, however, they’re squished into a square. The height is slightly less than 1080 and the width is a lot less than 1440. This happens regardless of whether I import as footage or composition. How do I get them to maintain their size and aspect ratio when adding them to the composition? Thanks.

Aah, yes. Thanks very much. I was aware of that issue but just haven’t encountered it yet in anything I’ve worked on. Didn’t think about it hard enough, I guess. It seems to me the most intuitive way to work would be to create an image (in Photoshop or Illustrator, e.g.) at the final resolution of the comp, but with square pixels so it doesn’t look distorted. Then interpret the footage in AE to the comp’s pixel aspect ratio. Any cons to that approach?

Thanks for the thoughtful answer, Dave. Have you ever seen a table laying out these relationships for various comp sizes?
