image sequences vegas
Posted by Robert Dunn on April 16, 2012 at 12:46 pmIs it better to render/import image sequences (as for example mp4 clips) to project timeline or just import the sequence itself and let vegas render them with the whole project? I don’t understand what’s happening under the hood but advice appreciated!

April 16, 2012 at 7:25 pmPreviewing an image sequence can be pretty heavy work depending on the source image sizes, so rendering them out to a video makes sense for smooth editing – use an intermediate format or low compression (high bitrate) to maintain quality.
If you need to do any pan/crop or major colour/exposure etc adjustments to the image sequence, do them before rendering to get the best quality output.

April 16, 2012 at 11:39 pmThanks Matt. I’m not worried about the quality of the preview as much as the final render quality of the entire project. Does adding a mp4 clip to the timeline alongside other captured HDV video (mostly m2t files I think??)cause degradation of the re-rendered mp4?

April 17, 2012 at 4:43 pmYes, absolutely. Image sequences are by definition intra-frame compressed, meaning that the final render will have less overall compression artifacting. If final image quality is your top priority, stick with image sequences.

April 17, 2012 at 7:32 pmIf you get reasonably smooth preview of your project with the image sequence then just stick with that.
If the preview is really slow, then make whatever major adjustments you need (mainly pan/crop) on the image sequence, then render that to a high-quality format (preferably lossless, or Cineform or similar) at your desired project resolution, then replace the image sequence with the rendered segment and continue editing.
