  • Image Quality Difference In Preview Window vs. Sequence

Posted by Andrew Demsky on July 21, 2010 at 4:14 am

I am having an issue getting my image quality from my preview window to match the image quality once it is dragged into the sequence.

The footage I am working with was recorded in AVCHD 1080i with a Panasonic AG-HMC 40. It was then imported through Final Cut Express 4.0.1 and compressed with the Apple Intermediate Codec. The footage was edited in FCE then exported to 720×480, 29.97 fps, no compression.

I imported this footage to Premiere Pro CS5. In the “Viewer” or “Preview” window, the footage looks wonderful. I drag it into my sequence on the timeline and it looses quality. The color is degraded and there are motion blur (interlaced?) lines that appear. When I match these two clips up side by side in the viewer and canvas (the premiere equivalent) the loss of quality is very apparent.

The clip properties are as follows:

    Image Size: 720×480
    Pixel Depth: 32
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Average Data Rate: 39.5 MB/Second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.2121

The Sequence properties are as follows:
    720×480
    29.97
    48000 HZ-Stereo

Why am I losing quality when I drag this clip to the timeline?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

You aren’t by any chance only looking at one field as opposed to two? Click on your playback settings in the Programme Monitor. Make sure you a viewing Hi Resolution / Full Screen / Both fields

Thank You for getting back to me so quickly.

I could not find the “High Resolution” settings or the “Full Screen.” I did set my program window to both fields. I was set to “display first field.” The footage is now smoother than it was before.

    Thanks for the advice.
