Image problems with NTSC DVCPRO footage captured with AJ-HD1200A
I’m using a Panasonic AJ-HD1200A to capture some NTSC DVCPRO footage and getting some annoying artifacts that I’d like to avoid if possible. I’m working without a studio monitor, and the clips are being compressed for streaming so I can’t get away with junk around the sides of the image that would get cut off by a monitor.
Some clips have a little flicker along the top or bottom, which I’m guessing is junk from the source material that is normally just cut off on a monitor… I don’t really expect to get rid of that.
But there are also vertical bars on either side of the image that can be bigger or smaller depending on the clip (for instance, footage from a film will only have a sliver of black on the left or right, while something shot specifically for the piece or taken from archive footage will have significantly larger (up to about 30 pixels wide) bars. Is this just a problem with the source material (which was formatted for broadcast), or could the deck be introducing some of this? Is there any way to fix this without scaling the image?
I’ve got everything set up properly according to Panasonic’s recommended settings: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/sales_o/ieee1394/AJ-HD1200AP_FCPHD45.html
I’ve tried both DVCPRO NTSC >> DVCPRO NTSC and DVCPRO NTSC >> DV NTSC (basically just switching DIF OUT from 25M to DV and back, with no noticeable difference)
Any help would be appreciated…!
Cheers,
Scott
